Catching Hidden Leaks Early: A Weekend Check Anyone Can Do

Of every ten leak callouts we attend, roughly four have been running for over a month before anyone noticed. By then the water bill has crept up, a wall cavity is saturated, and what would have been a RM 300 fix has become a RM 1,500 one. The good news: your water meter will confess everything, if you ask it properly.

The 20-Minute Meter Test

1. Pick a quiet window. A weekend morning works — you need 20 minutes when nobody will use any water.
2. Close every outlet. Taps, showers, washing machine, and check the toilet isn't refilling. Don't close the main stopcock — the line must stay pressurised.
3. Photograph the meter. Include the small spinner disc and the last red digits.
4. Wait 20 minutes, photograph again. Any movement at all means water is leaving the system somewhere between the meter and your taps.

A slowly creeping last digit usually points to a toilet flapper or a pinhole leak. A visibly spinning disc with everything off suggests a concealed pipe failure — treat that with urgency.

Five Early Warning Signs

• A bill jump without a habit change. Compare against the same month last year, not last month — usage is seasonal.
• Warm or damp patches on floors. A hot-water line leaking under screed warms the tiles above it.
• Paint bubbling low on a wall. Moisture wicks up from a leak at floor level long before you see a stain.
• A musty smell in one room only. Persistent humidity in a closed cavity grows mould you smell before you see.
• Water pressure that slowly worsened. A growing leak steals pressure from the furthest outlet first.

When to Stop DIY-ing

If the meter test is positive and no visible fixture explains it, don't start opening walls.
