Instant or Storage? Choosing a Water Heater That Fits Your Home

Walk into any appliance store and you'll face a wall of heaters from RM 200 to RM 2,000, each promising the perfect shower. Strip away the marketing and the choice comes down to four questions: your water pressure, how many people shower back-to-back, whether you have a suitable power circuit, and what you want to pay monthly versus upfront.

Instant Heaters: The Malaysian Default

Point-of-use instant heaters dominate here for good reason: they heat only the water you use, cost little to run, and fit inside the bathroom. Two decisions matter:

• Pump or no pump? If your supply comes from a roof tank one floor up, gravity gives you weak flow — a built-in DC pump fixes the sad-drizzle shower. Homes on direct mains pressure or with a booster pump usually don't need one.
• Wattage. 3.6 kW is fine for warm showers; 4.5 kW gives a hotter margin during the December monsoon when inlet water runs cooler. Above that, check your wiring first.

Storage Heaters: For Multi-Point Comfort

A storage tank (30–68 litres, typically in the ceiling or a service yard) feeds several outlets at once: rain shower plus basin plus kitchen. Water arrives at a steadier temperature and full mains flow. The trade-offs are upfront cost, standby power loss, and a tank that will eventually corrode and need replacement — budget a 6–12 year life depending on water quality.

• Rain shower or bathtub: storage, sized 38 L per heavy user
• Whole-house hot water including kitchen: multipoint storage or two zoned units
• Rental property: basic instant, no pump — simple, cheap to maintain

Running Cost Reality Check

A 3.6 kW instant heater used 15 minutes daily costs roughly RM 25–30 a month at current tariffs. A 56 L storage tank kept hot around the clock runs RM 40–60. Over ten years that gap funds the nicer unit — do the math for your household before deciding on sticker price alone.
